On January 30, 2025, Pelita Global Mandiri Junior High School hosted a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration, offering students an immersive experience into Chinese culture. The event was a perfect blend of performance, art, and tradition, engaging students in a series of exciting and educational activities.
The day began with an energetic Barongsai and Lion Dance performance, where students watched the traditional dances filled with colorful costumes and rhythmic movements. The performances not only brought the festive spirit of the Chinese New Year to life but also introduced students to the symbolic meanings behind the dances, such as bringing good luck and driving away evil spirits.

Following the performances, the celebration continued with a creative workshop where students painted their own versions of traditional Chinese opera masks. This hands-on activity allowed students to explore Chinese art and culture, learning about the vibrant colors and intricate patterns used to represent different characters and emotions in Chinese opera. Students had the chance to express their creativity while gaining deeper insights into the rich history of Chinese artistic traditions.

Aufa Laoshi, the Mandarin teacher and event coordinator, shared her thoughts on the celebration:
“The Chinese New Year Celebration at SMP Pelita Global Mandiri was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience Chinese culture in a meaningful way. Watching the Barongsai and Lion Dance performances was an exciting and vibrant introduction to the traditions of the Chinese New Year, and it was fantastic to see the students so engaged and fascinated by the symbolism behind the dances. The Painting Chinese Opera Masks workshop was a perfect continuation, allowing students to explore the rich history of Chinese art and creativity. I am proud of how they embraced the activity, and it was rewarding to see them connect with Chinese culture in such a hands-on and enjoyable manner. This celebration truly enhanced their understanding of Chinese traditions and language!”

The event was a great success, not only celebrating Chinese New Year but also offering students a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture, art, and history. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to connect with a rich cultural tradition while having fun and learning new things.
