On January 30, 2025, Pelita Global Mandiri Elementary School held a vibrant celebration to mark the Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Snake. The event, which took place at the school’s field, involved all students from grades 1 to 6, who took part in a series of exciting activities to honor this important cultural occasion.
The celebration was filled with lively performances and engaging activities that captured the essence of Chinese traditions. One of the highlights was the mesmerizing Barongsai (Lion Dance) and Liong Dance, which brought the festivities to life with their energetic and colorful performances. These traditional dances are symbolic of good luck, fortune, and the warding off of evil spirits.
In addition to the performances, students enjoyed engaging in Art and Craft activities, where they created decorations and crafts inspired by the Chinese New Year, such as lanterns and red envelopes. The students’ creativity and enthusiasm shone through as they worked together to prepare the festive decorations.
A special part of the celebration was the shared noodle meal, which holds significant cultural meaning in Chinese traditions. Eating noodles during Chinese New Year symbolizes long life, happiness, and prosperity. The students gathered together to enjoy the meal, symbolizing unity and the wish for a prosperous year ahead.
Ms. Dian, the event coordinator, shared her thoughts on the celebration:
“It was wonderful to see the students so excited and engaged in all the activities. The Barongsai and Lion Dance performances were especially thrilling, and it was heartwarming to witness the students learning about the deep meanings behind Chinese traditions, like the significance of eating noodles. It was a great way for the students to connect with a different culture while having fun.”
This Chinese New Year celebration was a perfect example of how Pelita Global Mandiri Elementary School values cultural awareness and the importance of learning about different traditions. The event not only allowed students to enjoy a festive day but also taught them important lessons about cultural diversity, unity, and the values that come with celebrating the start of a new year.
